Briefing presenting the South and Central America and the Caribbean Dialogue of the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES)

Next Thursday (August 14th), starting at 12 p.m. (BRT), a briefing will be held to present the Central and South America and the Caribbean Dialogue of the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES), a joint initiative of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, with support from the COP30 Presidency, the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.

Inspired by the Global Stocktake of the Paris Agreement, the GES proposes an ethical and planetary listening on the climate crisis, bringing together social, cultural, spiritual, business, scientific, and political leaders in six intercontinental Dialogues and Self-Organized events. At the center of one of the COP30 leadership Circles, the initiative aims to bring to COP30 a global synthesis with contributions from civil society to accelerate the implementation of Mission 1.5, which seeks to limit the average global temperature increase to 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels, the main goal of the Paris Agreement.

The GES is based on Regional Dialogues to be held until October on different continents – the first, representing Europe, took place in London in June – and Self-Organized Dialogues, promoted by civil society organizations and national and subnational governments following the same methodology and principles as the central process.

The meetings bring together religious, political, and business leaders, artists, representatives of indigenous peoples, local communities, and afro-descendants, young people, scientists, policymakers, and activists. Participants are selected to reflect the diversity of identities, geographies, sectors, and worldviews. In each region, a co-convenor will help promote and articulate the principles, objectives, and operationalization of the GES. They are: Mary Robinson (Europe), Michelle Bachelet (South America and the Caribbean), Wanjira Mathai (Africa), Kailash Satyarthi (Asia), Anote Tong (Oceania), and Karenna Gore (North America).

The process will generate six regional reports and a summary report, which will be submitted to the COP30 Presidency at the Pre-COP in October to aid the conceptualization of decisions and will be sent to Heads of State and climate negotiators.

The briefing presenting the GES’s South and Central America and the Caribbean Dialogue will be attended by the following authorities:

  • CEO of 30th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP30), Ana Toni;
  • Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva;
  • Former President of Chile and co-convenor of the South and Central America and the Caribbean Dialogue, Michelle Bachelet.
